Welcome to Our World

Hello Everyone. My name is Stephen Sullivan and I am a computer instructor at the Alabama Institute for Deaf and Blind (AIDB), Regional Center in Mobile, Alabama. I primarily work with students who have what I like to call nonstandard eyesight (traditionally known as low vision or blindness) and I have nonstandard eyesight myself.

I thought blogging would be a good way to get my students more active on the computer and familiar with all the great tools that are free on the web. Blogging is also a great way to communicate and build community. Best of all for people with vision loss it does not require any transportation, except for a computer.

Each week there will be a new topic posted related to technology, education, employment, living with blindness, or some current event of interest to the Out of Sight Community. Come and visit often and be sure and join in on the conversation.

  5. Hello Mr. Sullivan,

In response to your questions regarding technology and the impact of same on my life, please see below:

I have come to understand technology as man made tools that may improve and/or destroy the quality of life that moves us as a people beyond the limits of human capabilities.

On a personal level, technology has moved me from a world of darkness into a place of expectancy and empowerment. Additionally, this medium is repairing wounds caused by periods of blindness and related traumas associated with Graves eye attacks.

In conclusion, I am pleased to live during a time of technological change and innovations.
Yet, as a people we must monitor and guide the direction of all aspects of change introduced to our world.

  7. My Idea of Technology are many different devices that our society use to make our lives easier living in the world today. These can include devices we use at home or at work that are necessary, leisure, and, medical uses. ex are Stoves to cook our food. Dvd players to watch movies, Computers and internet, Hearing aids to help the hearing impaired hear better. Magnifyers to help the vision impaired see better.
